Angus

Wednesday I let myself in the back door in time to hear Rosie say, “No, I’m not worried. I just want to be careful. You know I’m not experienced with money. I’m just trying to understand. Trying to handle everything right.”

She glances up at me, big-eyed, says goodbye to whoever she’s talking to, and ends her call.

I’ve brought sandwiches for us to share. I put them on the library table and grab drinks from the fridge. “Was I interrupting anything? Need me to leave?” I kiss the top of her head and settle into my seat.

“No, I’m good. You’re fine.” She doesn’t reach for me for another kiss. That’s a first.

I pretend I don’t notice. Line the sandwiches up between us, point to each one. “Cheesesteak. Turkey and swiss. Reuben.” I unwrap them all and pick up half of the cheesesteak for myself.

She’s quiet, examining the sandwiches.

I can’t just let it go. “Rosie, you’d tell me if you were having some kind of money problem, right?”

She takes her time choosing half the Reuben. “I don’t know.” She lifts a corner of the bread, redistributes the meat more evenly. “But I’m fine, Angus. No trouble.”

I wait, finishing my half sandwich and starting on half the turkey, but she doesn’t say anything else. I try again. “It’s just, I noticed all the money books lying around. Wondered if maybe you need me to hold off on some of the renovations. Maybe scale back?” I can donate my time. Make my scoreboard and me happy to help her out.

She flashes me a quick, sweet smile. “No, we’re good.” But she shifts in her seat like she’s uncomfortable.

“And I’m not, like, eating you out of house and home? ’Cause I can start buying the groceries. Helping out…”

She rounds her eyes at me. “Angus! I’m fine! No money worries, I promise.” She sets her sandwich down, only a single bite missing, and comes over to my side of the table to kiss me on the forehead, nose, and lips. “But you are very sweet to offer.” She heads for the stairs. “I’ve got a couple of errands to run. Need anything while I’m out?”

“No. Thanks.”

She clatters back down the stairs with her purse, waves and blows me a kiss before closing the front door behind her.

Well, that was weird.

I eye her abandoned sandwich as I finish eating. She’s never hopped up and run off in the middle of a meal before. And it’s not like her to just leave food lying around. Usually she fights me for cleanup duties.

I think back to the conversation I’d overheard. What she’d said was troubling, but her tone wasn’t worried exactly. Not sure what it was. Not happy, but not scared. Irritated? Impatient? Who was she talking to? A bank? A creditor? I’ve got no clue.

When I asked my questions, she didn’t seem concerned about money. But there was something… She was hiding something.

That bothers me. Not because I think we should know everything about each other already; it’s early days.
